The marriage issue between Black Stars skipper, Asamoah Gyan and his wife Gifty is gradually pulling reactions and attention from different angles.
Stories about their marriage, DNA test proceeding to divorce have been recently featured on many headlines. Asamoah Gyan at the inception of his charges claims that his wife has been cheating on him with another man and as such requested a DNA test on their children.
The story progressed to the extent of his brother, Baffour Gyan seizing passports from the wife and her children to stop them from travelling.
Now, Gifty Gyan and her children are reported to be in UK after a court gave them the liberty to travel.
However, a woman who supposed to be a friend or probably a relative to Gifty has made some revelations about the ongoing conjugality dispute between the Gyan family.
In about 50 minutes’ video, the woman claims that all the words Asamoah Gyan drooled out during the court trials are total lies with no truth.
According to the woman, the football star is just ruining his own reputation by making false statements and allegations against his wife. Playing a brief recording as a proof, Asamoah Gyan during the court trial stated that he had not been receiving payment from his football club for about six months, indicating that he is financially sick.
The skipper of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan has shocked the Accra Family Court hearing the case of marriage annulment between him and Gifty Gyan that he is walking around a “broke man” and has not been paid for some months now.
The court had ordered Asamoah Gyan to ensure he paid for the air ticket of his wife and all their three children traveling from the UK to Ghana for a DNA test to be conducted.
The court demanded that the children must be protected from the stigma of the ongoing court process for which reason it was suggested Asamoah Gyan booked a business or 1st class ticket for them and their mother as well as prepare an accommodation for them in Accra.
Asamoah Gyan, however, told the court he is broke and cannot afford a business or 1st class ticket because he has not been paid for some months.
This is after he told the court in August that he can only afford Ghc3000 a month for the upkeep of the 3 children and the wife who are based in the UK.
A source close to the wife has said Mrs Gyan doesn’t need her husband’s money and has since refused to go for it since August when he began paying in court.
On Asamoah’s claim to be broke to the extent that he cannot afford to pay the business class ticket for the children as it will include their mother, the court warned against delay tactics, refusing to agree with him.
The court therefore ordered him to file his full bank account details with the court in two weeks.
The Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan had earlier in 2016 accused one Sarah Kwablah with whom he had sex of trying to extort money from him.
Speaking about his sexual encounter with the girl, Gyan said he went to Sarah Kwabla’s house at Weija near the West Hills Mall in “his dirty training kits” and had sex, but because the family believes he is well to do, they want to make money out of him.
He said Sarah had joined him at the training grounds at SCC and after training, he introduced her to his colleagues as a friend.
Since Sarah’s house, located behind the West Hills Mall at Weija was not far away from the training grounds, Gyan said they went to her house in his car, whilst he was still wearing his dirty training kits.
They both enjoyed the lovemaking, he recounted but Sarah twisted the story and later accused him of rape. “We had a good time,” Gyan said.
He said Sarah and her family wanted to extort money from him and that was why they accused him of rape.
He said, if he had raped her, she wouldn’t have had the strength to walk him out and open her house gate for him to drive his car out.
Recounting how they met, Gyan said they met through social media and so they exchanged many text messages and spoke on phone a number of times
Asamoah Gyan is regarded as one of the highest paid footballers in Ghana. Shanghai SIPG of the Chinese Super league thrust Asamoah Gyan into the list of the highest paid players on the globe. He turned out to be the highest paid players in Ghana making a whopping £ 22700 a week. Currently, he emerges top on the list of the richest footballers in Ghana.
Asamoah Gyan net worth is estimated at $23 Million by Yen Ghana. Most of this net worth is from his involvement in businesses outside the pitch. He owns McCarthy Hill House, a mansion worth $3 Million and drives among many others, Phantom car which is manufactured by Roll Royce valued at £400,000. Asamoah Gyan owned a fleet of cars among them Mercedes Benz and Bugatti.
His transfer to Sunderland saw him bag a deal worth $ 13 Million. In his current club in Turkey, the salary of the Ghana captain is unknown but is believed to take home about £ 89,000 a week.
Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has finally broken his silence about the discourse over his marriage which has been in the news and public domain within the past week.
Gyan has admitted that his marriage is on the rocks but clarified that the process that is ongoing at the Accra High Court is not a petition for divorce but an annulment process.
Asamoah Gyan and Gifty have been together since 2003 and got married in 2013 after their second child was born. Sources close to Asamoah Gyan confirmed GhanaWeb’s story but declined to comment publicly.
What’s the Legal Difference Between Annulment and Divorce?
There are two ways to legally end a marriage – annulment and divorce. An annulment is a legal procedure which cancels a marriage between a man and a woman. Annulling a marriage is as though it is completely erased – legally, it declares that the marriage never technically existed and was never valid.
A divorce, or legal dissolution of a marriage, is the ending of a valid marriage between a man and a woman returning both parties to single status with the ability to remarry.

An annulment case can be initiated by either the husband or the wife in the marriage. The party initiating the annulment must prove that he or she has the grounds to do so and if it can be proven, the marriage will be considered null and void by the court. The following is a list of common grounds for annulment and a short explanation of each point:bigamy, forced consent, fraud, marriage prohibited by law, mental illness, mental incapacity, inability to consummate marriage, underage marriage, adultery, desertion and physical/emotional abuse.
He also cautioned media outlets and members of the public against the misinformation being peddled about his marriage.
A statement signed by his lawyer Mr Edwin Kusi Appiah and made exclusively available to Graphic Online (www.graphic.com.gh) said, “Our client has noted the level of misinformation as well as the veiled and sometimes open attempt to discredit him, his family and or his friends and therefore we write for and on behalf of Mr Asamoah Gyan on matters that have come to his attention because they have been largely publicised and talked about within the media space across the country.”
The Prosecutor in the ongoing trial of four suspects, Osarfo Anthony, Ekow Micah, Sarah Kwablah, and Chris Handler, accused of extorting money from Asamoah Gyan, has disclosed to court that the docket of the case has been referred to the office of the Attorney General.
This news came as a big shock to the trial judge and all in court on Thursday, 3rd November, 2016, as the case which is over a year and gradually reaching a closure, has to be referred to the Attorney General’s office.
On the day, Asamoah Gyan’s lawyer, Kissi Agyabeng, was the next witness to testify but was nowhere to be found when the case was called. When the trial judge asked where he was, the Prosecutor said, “My Lord, the docket of this case has been referred to the Attorney General’s office.”
Asked why the referral to the AG’s office without a copy of such a letter to the court, the Prosecutor could not give any answer. The judge therefore asked the Prosecutor to furnish the court with the letter come 24th November, 2016.
Lawyer Kissi’s Scheme
First witness in the case, in the person of Asamoah Gyan’s manger, Samuel Annim Addo, told the court that Osarfo Anthony was doing publications on the Gyan and Sarah Kwablah rape and sodomy allegations last year on a blog, GHBase.com, Osarfo writes for.
A witness in the case, Nii Amarh Armateifio, a worker at 3 FM at TV3, approached Osarfo and asked him to stop the publication and that whatever money the latter’s media house, will lose, they are prepared to negotiate for Asamoah Gyan to pay the publishing cost to kill the story.
Osarfo, insisted the whole proposal be put on paper and signed; something both parties agreed and did. On the day Asamoah Gyan’s manager met Osarfo and gave part of the agreed sum, the police arrested Osarfo and later charged him for extorting money from Gyan.
According to Asamoah Gyan’s manager, Sammy Annim, it is Gyan’s lawyer, Kissi Agyabeng, who directed him on the whole scheme to get Osarfo arrested. To achieve what? Lawyer Kissi could not be in court to explain himself – yet, the case has been referred to the AG.
Possible Reasons For Referring Case To AG
A number of lawyers, who were in court and have been following the case, were equally appalled at the sudden u-turn by the Prosecutor in taking the docket back to the AG. They gave reasons and possible outcomes on this latest development of the case.
“Probably, the Prosecutor is detecting that they can’t win the case or their evidences are not strong enough so they want to withdraw the case” one lawyer explained. Another lawyer also said, “It’s obvious the Prosecutor has no case. I have been following this case since last year. They have just wasted the time of the court and that of the accused.”
They further explained that if the AG does not want to continue the case, it will issue what is called Nolle Prosequi – a term in law which means “will no longer prosecute”. It amounts to a dismissal of charges by the prosecution.
What Will Be The Fate of The Accused Persons?
The lawyers explained that once the Prosecution discontinues the case, the accused shall be discharged but that does not mean they are free in the true sense of the word- because the case was not determined or judgment was not passed. The AG can reopen the case anytime it so deem fit– because the accused have not been acquitted and discharged.
The case continues on Thursday, 24 November, 2016.
The legal battle between Asamaoh Gyan- captain of Ghana’s senior National soccer team and four defendants is still going on and Nkonkonsa.com brings exclusive updates.
Exclusive Nkonkonsa.com update on the ongoing trial of four suspects, Osarfo Anthony, Ekow Micah, Sarah Kwablah, and Chris Handler, accused of allegedly conspiring to extort money from Asamoah Gyan, is that, Gyan’s lawyer, Kissi Agyabeng, is the next witness to testify in court.
On Thursday, 20th October, 2016, when the case was called, lawyer Kissi Agyabeng was in court. When the trial judge asked the prosecutor if he has any other witness to testify in the case, lawyer Kissi raised his hand and said he is the next witness. He however could not testify because he had to go to another court for a case.
Lawyer Kissi’s Scheme
First witness in the case, in the person of Asamoah Gyan’s manger, Samuel Annim Addo, told the court that Osarfo Anthony was doing publications on the once viral Gyan and Sarah Kwablah rape and sodomy allegation last year.
A witness in the case, Nii Amarh Armateifio, a worker at 3 FM at TV3, approached Osarfo and asked him to stop the publication and that whatever money the latter’s media house, GHBase.com, will lose, they are prepared to negotiate for Asamoah Gyan to pay to kill the story.
Osarfo, insisted the whole proposal be put on paper and signed; something both parties agreed and did. On the day Asamoah Gyan’s manager met Osarfo and gave part of the agreed amount, the police arrested Osarfo and later charged him for extorting money from Gyan.
According to Asamoah Gyan’s manager, Sammy Annim, it is Gyan’s lawyer, Kissi Agyabeng, who directed him on the whole scheme to get Osarfo arrested. To achieve what? Lawyer Kissi shall reveal that in court in the next hearing.
The next hearing is expected to be an interesting one; as lawyer Ampaw and lawyer Lampting Apanga, shall be drilling lawyer Kissi Agyabeng under cross-examination. A learned friend, cross-examining another learned friend will certainly be an interesting one; since they both understand each other’s language very well. Lawyer Ampaw promises to make more shocking revelations about Gyan during cross-examination of lawyer Kissi.
The Investigator for the case, Richmond Ayayi, who came to court to testify, has finally been discharged. The Investigator, who is no longer a worker in the Ghana Police Service due to interdiction – for allegedly stealing GHC 20 million and several bars of gold from an Indian company in Osu, told the court that he has been reinstated. Asked to bring his reinstatement letter to the court, he could not produce it till his discharge from the case.
Lawyer Ampaw Exposed Investigator
Lawyer Maurice Ampaw who is the defense counsel for the 3 accused:Osarfo Anthony, Ekow Micah, and Sarah Kwablah, exposed the Investigator by telling the court how the Investigator, doctored the voices of the four accused by stitching their voices together, so that when one listens to their conversations, it sounds or appear as though they planned evil against Gyan. He also told the court how the Investigator deleted some voice recordings which the latter knows can help Osarfo and the others prove their innocence in the trial.
Audios Thrown Out
The court has therefore thrown out the audios because they turn out to be mere pictures and a video in the court’s records, labelled as Exhibit C– which the prosecutor and the Investigator, could not identity.
The four suspects – Osarfo Anthony, Ekow Micah, Sarah Kwablah, and Chris Handler, accused of allegedly conspiring to extort money from Asamoah Gyan, may have to heave a deep sigh of relief as the High Court, has thrown out their alleged phone conversations tendered in court by Asamoah Gyan, against them.
This revelation happened in court on Tuesday, 20th September, 2016 when the Investigator in the case, told the court that he extracted voices of the four accused from a CD– and in that voice recordings, the four can be heard loud and clear, planning on how to extort money from Gyan for allegedly raping and sodomizing Sarah Kwablah.
The Investigator told the court that he gave the said voices to the complaint in the case – in the person of Samuel Anim Addo, who is the manager of Asamoah Gyan to tender in court. Sammy, on 10th February, 2016, Samuel Anim Addo tendered the audios and was duly played in open court for all to listen.
LAWYER AMPAW EXPOSES INVESTIGATOR Lawyer Maurice Ampaw who is the defense counsel for the 4 accused, exposed the Investigator in wrapping up his cross-examination by telling the court how the Investigator, doctored the voices of the four accused by stitching their voices together, so that when one listens to their conversations, it sounds or appear as though they planned evil against Gyan.
He also told the court how the Investigator deleted some voice recordings which the latter knows can help Osarfo and the others prove their innocence in the trial. “When you were extracted those audios, was any of the accused present or witnessed it?” Lawyer Ampaw asked the Investigator – who responded, “No my lord.” Asked to explain why, he said “nothing my lord.”
SIX MONTHS LATER Six (6) months after the tendering of those extortion tapes which were labeled exhibit C in the court’s records, the audios turn out to be mere pictures and a video – which the prosecutor and the Investigator, could not identity what they are about.
PROSECUTION’S PLEA OVER-RULED
The prosecutor therefore argued that the court should allow them play the same audios from a laptop or upload the audios from the laptop unto a pen drive – but the trial judge ruled, “That is now possible because these new audios you claim and the laptop are not exhibits in the court’s records. They have not been tendered and cannot be tendered at this time.” The trial judge however, admitted that she recall the alleged extortion taps was played in court.
BENCH WARRANT ISSUED AGAINST EKOW MICAH Sarah Kwablah and Ekow Micah were absent in court. Lawyer Lampting Apanga, told the court that Sarah’s absence is due to severe abdominal pains she is suffering as a result of her menses but Ekow was on his way to the court – an excuse the judge refused to accept and for that matter issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
The case continues on 4th October, 2016. The Investigator is expected to present to the court, Osarfo’s laptop, desk top computer, modem, phone, bag and others which they went to his house at 10: 30 pm to take to assist investigations– after which he will be discharged.
Legal luminary, Dr. Maurice Ampaw, who is the Defense counsel for four accused: Osarfo Anthony, Ekow Micah, Sarah Kwablah, in an ongoing case of extortion on Thursday, 1st September, 2016, disclosed to court how Asamoah Gyan asked Sarah Kwablah to abort the pregnancy for any amount of money she wants.
The lawyer made those appalling revelations in court on Thursday 1st September, 2016 when he continued with his cross-examination on the Investigator. Lawyer Ampaw read some portions of the about 100 pages printed Whatsapp chats between Gyan and Sarah.
Lawyer Ampaw asked, “Would you be shocked if I reveal to you that Asamoah Gyan asked A3 (Sarah Kwablah) to abort her pregnancy for any amount of money?” The Investigator answered, “Yes my Lord.”Lawyer Ampaw continued, “Asamoah Gyan asked A3 and I read (reading from the chats), “I am not ready for a child. You are a devil. If you abort the baby and not tell anyone what I did to you, I will give you any amount of money.”
The Investigator admitted in open court that he is shocked at the revelations because he could not ascertain them in the course of his investigations. When lawyer Ampaw was about to give more graphical mind-blowing revelations from the printed chats, the trial judge asked him to hold it for Sarah to tender all the chats when she open her defense.
CID’s Conflicting Testimony
Richmond Ayayi, the interdicted CID/Investigator who investigated into the case, finds himself in a very tight corner – as he continues to give contradictory testimony of what he told or tells the court and what the complainant in the case, Asamoah Gyan’s manager, Samuel Anim Addo, told the court.
According to Asamoah Gyan’s manager, Osarfo Anthony called Gyan to threaten and to demand money from the latter – but the Investigator, in his testimony, told the court that one of Asamoah Gyan’s boys, who work at 3 FM by name Nii Armah Armateifio, rather contacted Osarfo, pleading to kill the story with money; Osarfo is therefore vindicated on that.
Also, Asamoah Gyan’s manager tendered in court a sheet he claims Osarfo signed with the former to stop publications on Gyan’s alleged rape and sodomy – but the Investigator told the court that it’s not an agreement but a receipt. The Investigator also told the court that Osarfo gave out the receipt to Asamoah Gyan’s manager on the day he was arrested – 29th July, 2015 receiving the money.
The ever sagacious lawyer Ampaw, asked the Investigator to check the date on the receipt – after, the Investigator told the court its 23rd July, 2015. “So if A1 (Osarfo) was arrested on 29th July, 2016 and sent to police custody on that same day, how did he sign a receipt dated 23rd July, 2016?” The Investigator simply looked silly and ashamed with no answer– as audience in court laughed on.
Again, Asamoah Gyan’s manager tendered in chief, evidence of some phone conversations he claim are the supposed conspiracy conversations amongst the suspects to extort money from Asamoah Gyan. When asked under cross-examination where he got those audios from, he said the police extracted them from Osarfo’s laptop and gave to him to tender in court.
When the Investigator was asked about the same audios and how he obtained them, he told the court that he extracted them from a CD which belongs to Osarfo. According to him, Osarfo burn those audios unto a CD to be given to Asamoah Gyan’s manager. What for – he could not explain.
Lawyer Ampaw Finished With Cross-Examination
Lawyer Ampaw finished his cross-examination on the Investigator for his 3 clients; Osarfo Anthony, Ekow Micah, and Sarah Kwablah. In his closing comments, lawyer Ampaw told the Investigator to the face: “I put it to you that Osarfo Anthony, Sarah Kwablah, and Ekow Micah did not extort any money from Asamoah Gyan! You failed to do a proper investigation into this case! You failed woefully in your investigation into this serious case! You have been untruthful to this court!”
The next court hearing is on Tuesday, 6th September, 2016 – for lawyer of Chris Handler to wrap up on the cross-examination on the CID so the court discharges him.
Richmond Ayayi, the interdicted CID who investigated the ongoing alleged extortion trial against 4 suspects; Osarfo Anthony, Chris Handler, Sarah Kwablah, and Ekow Micah, has told the court that after his investigation, he was not aware Sarah Kwablah, the lady Asamoah Gyan allegedly raped and sodomized, extorted money from the Black Star captain.
Vindicating Testimony On Osarfo
On last week’s hearing, the CID vindicated the first accused, Osarfo Anthony, by telling the court that Osarfo did not contact Asamoah Gyan to threaten or demand any money from Gyan – though earlier reports on the case spread that false impression about the respected Entertainment Writer.
The CID told the court that one Nii Armah Armateifio, who works with 3 FM at TV 3, first contacted Osarfo and the idea was “to convince Osarfo with money from Asamoah Gyan to stop publication on the rape and sodomy allegations in the interest of Gyan” – – Lawyer Ampaw made this revelation to the shock of all in court on Thursday, 18th August, 2016.
Celebrity lawyer, Dr. Maurice Ampaw who is the Defence Council for Osarfo Anthony, Sarah Kwablah, and Ekow Micah, told the court how Nii bombarded Osarfo will calls and Facebook chats – all in an attempt to kill the story in the interest of Asamoah Gyan.
He further told the court that because Osarfo is a genuine person, he told Nii that they should put whatever they are discussing verbally and in chats, into a formal agreement – an indication that Osarfo meant no evil against Asamoah Gyan or to extort money from the Black Star captain.
On Thursday, 25th August, 2016, celebrity lawyer, Maurice Ampaw, continued his cross-examination; this time, shifting the focus on Sarah Kwablah, who is the third accused in the case. Under cross examination, lawyer Ampaw asked the CID if Sarah Kwablah extorted money from Asamoah Gyan.
In his response, the CID told the court that “I’m not aware my Lord.” Still under cross-examination, the smart lawyer asked the CID the same question in a different way; “Did Sarah demand money from Asamoah Gyan?” This time, the CID turned a sharp U-Turn and told the court “yes my Lord”. That response got all in the court to burst out laughter.
Asked to explain how Sarah demanded money from Gyan, he said, “She called Gyan on phone to demand money.” When queried if he has any evidence to his claim, he said no. Again, the CID had earlier tendered in court, a sheet he claims to be a receipt that Osarfo Anthony gave to Asamoah Gyan’s manager, after the latter gave him money. Lawyer Ampaw asked the CID to read everything on the sheet to the open court:
“In pursuance of our earlier verbal discussion with your client to stop publications on his alleged sodomy and or rape scandal with a lady by name Sarah Kwablah, the editorial board of GHBase.com, upon the signing of this agreement with you, officially consents never to publish any reportage on the said case.
The client [Asamoah Gyan] therefore pays the publisher [GHBase.com] an amount of Ȼ25,000 [Publishing Cost] with the obligation that should the site ever do any publication on the said allegation or give out any facts or evidence on the said case to any third party person for publication, reproduction or duplication, your client has the unequivocal right to sue the site and its publisher for criminal or civil tort – whichever case may be,” the document, signed by Osarfo Anthony on July 23, 2015, stated.
Asked if he still maintains what he read to the court is a receipt, the CID said, “It’s a receipt my Lord; not an agreement. Receipts are signed by one person. That is why it bears the signature of A1 (Osarfo Anthony.” Whether it’s a crime for a business to issue a receipt to its client or not, or those who extort money from their victims issue receipts to their victims or not, is a big question left to the judge to rule on.
Judge Expresses Shock At ID’s Conduct
With the way and countenance the CID gave inconsistent testimony as he fumbled with words in court, the trial judge, who was a bit taken aback, asked the CID; “Are you really a CID? Have you not been to court before?” Audience in court burst into laughter- causing the court clerk to shout “order in court.”
Case was adjourned to 1st September, 2016 for continuation of cross-examination.
Whilst the black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, is missing in court to testify, the CID in the controversial rape, sodomy, and extortion of money allegation against 4 suspects; Osarfo Anthony, Chris Handler, Sarah Kwablah, and Ekow Micah,Richmond Ayayi, is under pressure to cough out some missing dollars he tendered as exhibits to the court amounting to 1,000 dollars.
First Testimony by CID
Richmond Ayayi appeared in court to testify as the investigator into the matter some weeks ago. On the first day of testifying, he ended up fumbling in court as he speaks – opening himself to laughter from the audience in court and the judge alike.
The prosecutor therefore pleaded with the court to adjourn the case for the CID to refresh his memory so he can testify well to the court and was upheld by the trial judge her Lordship, Afia Agbanu Kumador.
Evidence Tendered In Court By CID
On Thursday, 28th July, 2016, the CID tendered in chief, the below evidences to the court: charge and caution sheets of all four suspects, chats (Whatsapp) of one of the suspects, signed sheets of extortion money recorded with serial numbers, and the extortion money of GHC 20,000 – which included 1,000 dollars.
The court clerk took the dollar notes, counted them – only to realize the amount is 900 dollars and not 1,000 dollars as the CID had told the court. When asked why the shortage of 100 dollars from the money, the CID stood there dumbfounded – only for the prosecutor to plead for an adjournment for them to put their ‘house’ together well for next hearing – which was granted by the court. The CIDalso tendered in chief, an evidence which he claimed is a receipt from Osarfo Anthony to Asamoah Gyan – – a revelation that again made many in court burst out of laughter, perhaps, because people who extort money from their victims don’t issue receipts.
So if Osarfo issued an official receipt to the black stars captain, then it suggest that both parties had a formal business transaction of a sort – so why the extortion charge against Osarfo Anthony? “Do people who extort money from their victims issue out receipts?” lawyer Maurice Ampaw is likely to ask the CID under cross examination in the next hearing of the case.
Last week, Thursday, 4th August, 2016, the CID appeared in court again only to tell the judge that he couldn’t find the 100 dollar note to present to the court. Asked when he can bring the money, he pleaded with the court to give him up to the end of August but the trial judge did not grant so.
Knot Around CID’s Neck
The CID told the court that after taking the money as exhibit from Osarfo, he brought it to the police station, recorded all the serial numbers of each of the 100 dollar notes and made Osarfo sign to it – so now that 100 dollars is missing from the money, a very tight knot hangs around the neck of the CID to produce the same 100 dollar note with the same serial number on it and present to the court.
Background of CID
Richmond Ayayi is amongst 3 other police officers who work at the Airport Police station who were arrested for allegedly stealingGH¢1.36 million and 974 grammes of gold valued at GH¢2.1 million belonging to five Indian businessmen. Richmond Ayayi is currently on interdiction.
The next court hearing is on 18th August, 2016 – where the CID is expected to produce the 100 dollar note with the same serial number on it to make his 1,000 dollars exhibit to the court complete – else the court may thrown out his exhibits from the court’s records.
Prosecution Evidence Thrown Away
On Thursday 15th October, 2015, the complainant in the case – also the manager of Asamoah Gyan, Samuel Anim Addo, told the court that Osarfo Anthony and Sarah Kwablah sent him and Asamoah Gyan threatening messages respectively to extort money from Gyan. The court therefore asked him to tender those messages in court as evidence.
On Monday 26th October 2015, the prosecution led by ACP Moses Atibilla, brought the printed messages and asked Samuel Anim if he is indeed tendering those messages as evidence in court and he responded, “Yes my lord.”
The printed messages bore no name or number of Osarfo Anthony. The counsel for the accused persons led by celebrity lawyer, Dr. Maurice Ampaw, cross-examined Samuel by asking the latterto prove to the court that the messages he is tendering as evidence, was truly sent to him or Asamoah Gyan by Osarfo.
In what became a court room drama, neither the prosecutor nor Samuel Anim, could prove or indicate to the court that the said messages were sent by Osarfo Anthony. The trial judge therefore threw out those evidences against Osarfo Anthony.
The facts of the case are that an alleged sodomy story involving the skipper of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, broke in the Ghanaian media. The prosecutor stated that Sarah alleged in a publication that Asamoah Gyan had a sexual affair and unnatural carnal knowledge of her.
Alleged Extortion Scheme
ACP Atibilla indicated that Sarah discussed the issue with Ekow Micah and the two met with Anthony and Chris to publish the story on their website to scare Asamoah Gyan to give them money. The prosecutor further told the court that a witness in the case, Nii Armah Armateifio, who works at 3 FM, read the story on GHbase.com and quickly alerted Samuel to enable them stop the publication.
Feigning Of Interest By Complainant
As a result, the prosecutor disclosed, Samuel feigned interest to pay and when the publishers were contacted, they in consultation with Sarah and Micah charged a fee of GH¢30,000.Samuel bargained with the publishers and they settled on GH¢25,000, which the complainant agreed to pay at a meeting at Spice restaurant in Dansoman.
ACP Atibilla noted that Samuel, after the arrangement, reported the case to the police. He said on July 29 Samuel met Osarfo at the restaurant for payment, where an amount of $1,000, GH¢6,000 and a cheque of GH¢15,000 were paid to him.The police officer stated that Anthony was arrested after receipt of the money by the police and the others were subsequently arrested.
